Transitional Kindergarten Class

Transitional Kindergarten is a new beginning for developing the skills which will serve as a foundation for continuous lifelong learning. In this important year, children will develop relationships, independence, confidence, and the behaviors and attitudes that will foster their success in school and life.

The Enlighten Transitional Kindergarten curriculum is designed to engage children in the learning process, provide them with a sense of accomplishment, and help them develop a love for learning.

Our low teacher-to-student ratio provides one-on-one attention and flexibility for differentiated curriculums to help meet the needs of each student.

In the part-time Transitional Kindergarten program, students tackle math, grammar, phonics, and reading in the morning, while afternoon sessions feature music, writing, and science several times each week. The full-time Transitional Kindergarten program covers Chinese language arts and various enrichment classes including chess, go, sports, fine arts, and dance to support students’ interests.

Our curriculum creates an atmosphere of exploration and wonder, coupled by rich social opportunities discovered through play. In partnership with children and parents, we work to promote an emergent curriculum which develops and enhances the child's competence, identity and acceptance of others. Our practices provide valuable learning experiences for children as inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach which promotes meaningful and respectful relationships between the child, family, teacher and environment through careful observation, thought-provoking exchanges and mindful documentation.

Transitional Kindergarten Curriculum

Our full-day Transitional Kindergarten program aims to nurture and challenge our children on their path to becoming bilingual readers, writers, and critical thinkers. The program is built around five core subject areas: Chinese Language Arts, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and History/Geography.

English/Language Art

Students will develop fundamental skills that will prepare them for later learning in language arts. Phonemic awareness and decoding skills are the ability to understand that a word is made up of a sequence of speech sounds paired with the ability to manipulate those sounds. It is one of the most essential elements of language arts instruction in kindergarten. Students will learn the letter of the alphabet and will match letters with their associated sounds. Vocabulary will be developed through direct instruction in specific concepts. Books will be read daily together both as a group and individually in order to help them identify and use comprehension strategies. Students will learn to write letters, words, and beginning stories. The goals of the program include:

  • Engaging in independent and shared book reading and demonstrating an understanding of detailed informational and narrative text by asking or answering questions to monitor own comprehension
  • Demonstrating understanding of print material and simple concepts of grammar
  • Isolating the initial sound, middle vowel, and final sound in three-phoneme words
  • Assembling or splitting apart words to make new words, and identifying both short vowel sounds and long vowel sounds for most vowels
  • Writing and composing brief paragraphs that describe an experience
  • Mathematics

In Mathematics, students build their skills as logical thinkers who engage in analytic inquiry and decision-making. Our math program focuses on problem-solving and encourages students to find solutions on their own, with support and guidance from the teachers. We emphasize the development of students’ abilities to think for themselves and ensure they thoroughly understand fundamental concepts. Students learn each topic through four steps: Try, Understand, Apply, and Master. These steps reflect “learning through problem-solving” in actual classroom activities. Starting with concrete objects and pictures, we help students apply their knowledge to more abstract concepts as they grow with us. The goals of the program include:

  • Sorting objects to gather and organize information, comparing the groups of objects, and interpreting the information
  • Mastering basic concepts of simple math operations, measurement concepts, the complexity of patterning, and characteristics of shapes
  • Science

Students will learn that scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. To understand concepts and to address the content, students will develop their own questions and perform investigations. Topics covered in Science include:

  • Pulls and pushes
  • The five senses
  • Plants
  • Animals and their needs
  • Seasons
  • Weather
  • Taking care of the earth
  • History and Geography

In History and Geography, students build understanding and knowledge of specific historical time periods, people, and events, as well as of associated geographical concepts and skills. Topics covered in History and Geography include:

  • The world
  • The seven continents
  • The five oceans
  • Native Americans
  • Early exploration and settlement
  • The voyage of Columbus in 1492
  • The pilgrims
  • Independence Day
  • Presidents past and present
  • American symbols and figures
  • Chinese Language Arts

In Chinese Language Arts, students develop the ability to use Mandarin Chinese in a linguistically, culturally, and socially appropriate way. Our immersion environment mirrors the conditions in which monolingual Chinese speakers acquire their dominant language. We encourage students to be active learners and communicators in both formal and informal settings. More information about the textbook and curriculum can be found here.

    Music, Art, and P.E.

Beyond these five key subject areas, students also participate in Music, Art, and P.E. classes. These classes include content and skills relevant to their subject areas as well as opportunities to introduce a wider range of vocabulary and linguistic applications.

Social and emotional learning is an important part of our daily routine. We will teach and model the following ten social skills throughout the year:
